In its brief history, Teatro San Diego has aspired to excellence in its stage productions. Has been nominated for over thirty Broadway World Regional Awards since its initial production Songs For A New World (2021).
Review: Teatro San Diego makes impressive solo debut with ‘The Wiz’ -Pam Kragen
The only downside of the ambitious production staged at Diversionary Theater was its brevity
Because of the enduring pandemic, it took fledgling Teatro San Diego more than two years to stage its first live, solo-produced theater production. But “The Wiz,” which closed a one-weekend run Sunday at Diversionary Theatre, was worth the wait.
The musical — a rarely produced, soulful take on L. Frank Baum’s 122-year-old novel “The Wizard of Oz” — was creatively directed, with wildly imaginative costumes, excellent choreography and many memorable performances.
Review: Teatro San Diego’s reimagined ‘Songs’ makes powerful connection to today’s times -Pam Kragen
Teatro launched in 2020 with the goal of providing more work for San Diego theater artists of color and the LGBTQ and disabled communities. Its first full production — a filmed staging that opened for streaming over the weekend — follows through on that promise with a diverse cast and creative team and a modern rethinking of “Songs” that clearly reflects the social justice issues of today, while still honoring the musical’s origins.
Review: Teatro San Diego brought magic to THE WIZ
- E.H. Reiter
Directed by Chadaé Nichol, who made her directorial debut as part of the Artist Metamorphosis Initiative sponsored by Subaru of El Cajon kept the show and the emotions well paced, She made sure everyone utilized the stage to great effect, and kept wisely knew when to pull back in between high energy moments for more subdued by meaningful character moments.
The trio of witches were standouts, Muse has great vocals and the comedic chops as the slightly ditzy Addaperle, ShaNyeyah White is a powerful singer and a menacing Wicked Witch of the West, and Tyrah Hunter brought warmth and heart to her Aunt EM and Glinda. I'd love to see the musical origin story of these sisters with these performers.

Teatro San Diego Makes a Big Entrance -David Dixon
As more shows are being produced, both live and virtually, on a regular basis, it is a perfect time for a new company to make a big introduction to the San Diego theatre community. Teatro San Diego is currently presenting their inaugural production of Jason Robert Brown’s 1995 musical, Songs for a New World.
Teatro San Diego “exists to further the founding social activists and artists’ vision of bringing to life the multi-cultural spirit of San Diego through world-class visual and performing arts.”
New Teatro San Diego Debuts with Personal and Intense ‘Songs for a New World’

Whatever turn our lives were taking before, COVID has forced us to take a hard look at where we were and where we want to go or be — to re-visit, as these songs do, our hopes, dreams, fears, failures, potential and possibilities. Though the pandemic is never mentioned or referred to in the Teatro San Diego production, this “color-conscious” company, “defining All American,” committed to “raising the visibility of the underrepresented communities of San Diego,” has certainly placed the piece squarely in our time.
